Why Is a Machine Safety Action Plan Necessary?

Why is machine safety critical?

For large-scale production, companies rely on numerous machines in their value creation process. However, these machines pose significant occupational hazards to workers during routine production tasks and maintenance activities.

What are the risks associated with machines?

Section 51 of the Act Respecting Occupational Health and Safety (AOHS) mandates employers to safeguard the health and physical well-being of their workers. Without proper safety measures, machine-related accidents can result in:

  • Amputations
  • Cuts
  • Fractures
  • Deaths

These injuries often arise from unprotected access to danger zones or inadequate safety barriers between workers and machines. Yet, such risks can be mitigated with effective machine safety measures.

Why is securing a large machinery fleet challenging?

For companies with dozens or even hundreds of machines, ensuring safety can become a complex and costly endeavor. Should the focus be on machines that seem “more dangerous” or those used most frequently? This is where a machine safety action plan becomes invaluable.

What is a machine safety action plan?

A machine safety action plan is a structured decision-making tool designed to:

  • Identify non-compliance issues
  • Assign a risk index to individual machines
  • Provide actionable recommendations for safety improvements

By following a systematic approach, businesses can align with current regulations and prioritize safety effectively.

How to develop a machine safety action plan?

1. Take an inventory of the machines

It is important to make a list of the company’s entire machinery fleet. This inventory will allow you to have a precise list of all the company’s machines, their role and operation, their criticality in terms of production, etc. In addition, the more exhaustive the list is, the more certain you can be that no equipment has been overlooked.

  • Compile a comprehensive list of all machines in the company.
  • Include details on each machine’s role, operation, and production criticality.
  • Ensure no equipment is overlooked by creating an exhaustive inventory.

2. Facilitate internal discussions and communication

Implementing a machine safety action plan is an important strategic decision. It will impact workers on several levels: they may be involved when collecting information for analyses and when choosing and implementing risk reduction measures, for example.

  • Involve workers in the information-gathering process.
  • Engage teams in selecting and implementing risk reduction measures.
  • Foster collaboration to encourage ownership of safety initiatives.

3. Set goals, allocate resources, and define timelines

Following the internal discussion, measurable goals must be set with a view to implementing the action plan. All the necessary resources must be clearly identified, and the overall timeline for securing the machinery fleet must be defined. One example of a goal is to deal with all the “Red” equipment (highest risk index) within 6 months, or within a year, depending on the quantity of equipment.

  • Establish measurable objectives, such as addressing high-risk machines within a specific timeframe.
  • Clearly identify required resources (personnel, budget, tools).
  • Define a realistic timeline for securing the machinery fleet.

4. Prioritize the most dangerous machines

At this stage, it is a matter of carrying out a systematic and summary process in order to evaluate and prioritize the equipment in the machinery fleet. This step will allow the most dangerous machines to be prioritized with a view to implementing the safety approach.

It is also possible to add criteria to refine the prioritization of the equipment, such as the operational criticality of the equipment, the complexity of the measures to be implemented in relation to the safety gain, the anticipated costs of these measures, delivery times, etc.

  • Conduct a systematic evaluation of risk across the machinery fleet.
  • Rank machines based on their danger levels and other factors like:
    • Operational criticality
    • Complexity of safety measures
    • Anticipated costs and delivery times

What are the benefits of a machine safety action plan?

Implementing a safety action plan offers several advantages:

  • Enhanced worker safety through targeted risk mitigation.
  • Optimized resource allocation for safety improvements.
  • Regulatory compliance to avoid legal penalties and ensure operational continuity.

In conclusion, a machine safety action plan is an essential management tool to safeguard workers, prioritize resources, and secure compliance while systematically addressing risks in a machinery fleet.
