Electrical safety: Multisource

Electrical safety: Multisource

Many years ago, during a training session in electrical safety held in ABB inc. facility, we came up with a resourceful idea… why not to gather all voltage levels (120, 208, 460, 480 and 600V) in a single source, thus, workers can lockout the equipment from one energy-isolating device.

The danger of the multisource consists in power supplies that are not always close to the equipment. When a worker opens a switch of one of the five power supply and omit a second power supply from another location, even if he verifies that the voltage value is 0, the module in the panel still energized by the second source of power and an electrical shock can occur if he touches the equipment.

The aim of the new system is to reduce the electrical shock risk by keeping only one power supply input, thus, with an emergency stop, screens displaying the voltage level in each source, the new system is also considered as safer.

To make this idea real, ABB inc. had to mobilise substantial time and money investment, this action shows a good example in multisource safety management and it serves as a reference for the other employers in this domain.

Congratulations to ABB inc. on wining the ” CNESST Coup de cœur du public ” award-2016
